I suddenly couldn't find a tutorial I really liked in the past. So this is... mostly for personal reference? I guess?

Here you guys can has some tutorial anyway. I tried to keep it text-free for all you TL : DR people.

I made it in Paintool SAI but it should translate into Photoshop.

GAHHHH, i'm trying as hard as i can, when i think i'm doing ok...it ends up screwed up when i try to blend it all in on step 6... it's like one big blob pretty much. ~pouts~ GAHHH, they eyes, they sooo pretty though..

BLEND ALL THE THINGS!!!

...kidding. Are you keeping things on separate layers? I use loads and only merge at the end, if at all. I really need to update this tutorial, but by the end of drawing an eye I generally have it like this:

Top gun layer: Eye shine (solid dots)
2nd layer: Eye-shine (blended around to make it look shiny) (usually with some sort of layer effect like screen or decreased opacity, whatever looks good for the situation)
3rd layer: Eyelashes/liner, a bit of subtle shading where needed
4th layer: Iris/pupil (adjust the color levels or layer effect at the end for extra oomph)
5th layer: Sclera (white part of the eyeball)
6th layer:: Skin, eyebrows
7th layer:: Winning lotto ticket numbers
8th layer:: China

oh, steps. i'll see if following these steps makes a diffrence. but Yeah, i use seprate laters for each step you show me, if not each step..each diffrent color that i use. i ended up haveing i think 14+ layers just for one eye before merging them for step 6...but once i try blending them together, the colors though for arond the eye just end up going into a blob. i'll try again though :D too prety to give up on.

Just separate layers for the different areas, don't have to have different layers for every step.

That should help it out a bit.

Hi. I use SAI, and was wondering how you got the brushes to be that smooth and whatnot o:

Well the awesome part is... they aren't. ;D

I basically just block in on color, and then blend the hell out of it. Some parts, like the white shine on the eyes themselves, would obviously smear a lot of things if you did it on a single layer, so lots of it are done on separate layers instead.

This is super helpful with skin, too, as you can make it look very even where you want it to, and then go back and use a spotted brush to create quick n' dirty pores for realism.

I do save a bit of time by using DarlingMionette's brush set (here [link] ). IT IS NOT THE END ALL BE ALL OF BRUSHES, cause frankly you can achieve the same thing with even the default brushes. She does have some great tutorials though. :)
